About the tutor
Ian Court has been working as a Wildlife Conservation Officer for the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority since 1999. His remit covers the coordination and delivery of the Authorities work on animals, primarily birds and mammals but also including butterflies and moths.
This work includes the surveying and monitoring of a number of priority species including breeding waders, black grouse, raptors, red squirrels, dormice and the northern brown argus butterfly. The results of these surveys are used to help monitor population trends and underpins the Authorities advisory work, which plays a crucial role in assisting land managers to deliver a wide range of conservation objectives. One of Ian’s other main work objectives is to help raise awareness of the importance of the National Park for a wide range of key habitats and species.
About the course
This video will highlight the importance of habitats found in the Dales and Ingleborough area for a variety of wading birds, specifically; Curlew, Skylark, Snipe, Lapwing and Black Grouse. Ian will outline the key features of these birds, so you know what to look out for and the best places to spot them. He will then take you on a walk round their habitat, so you can see how this intertwines with the landscape and why it’s so important to respect and look after areas like the Dales.
